Everything you've always wanted to know (and then some) about...
Hollywood Reporter has called green-eyed, platinum-blonde Annie Wood, host of Tribune Entertainment's nationally syndicated show, BZZZ!, "a real find." They liken her on-screen dazzle, impertinence and spunk to Jean Harlow, Mae West and cinema comedienne, Joan Davis. Other critics have called up memories of Judy Holiday, Martha Raye, Goldie Hawn and Lucille Ball.
Her husky, warm, likable voice and rapid fire diction have been declared among the most memorable in the business today. Which explains why you will often here her pitching something or other on the radio. After watching her on stage, one industry executive concluded, "Annie is probably one of the most vivacious women to hit the TV screen in a long, long time. She's a natural!"
All across America, the public seems to concur, as Annie is regularly approached by teenagers, college kids, parents and old folks, alike. Cross-country press junkets for BZZZ! took Annie to public events in Boston, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, New Orleans, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Portland and Kansas City where she was met by happy fans of all ages.
Annie receives hundreds of letters seeking autographs, pictures and even advice. Children send her handmade bracelets, drawings and other gifts. Boys, girls and their parents want their pictures taken with her. Often, in person, they simply want to talk to her, or hug her - because they feel somehow that Annie Wood is their friend.
Annie openly boasts about being a tomboy. This seems to have garnered the 5'9" blonde an immense measure of loyalty and acceptance among women of far-reaching ethnic, demographic and economic strata.
In point of fact, Annie Wood is a classically trained, serious actress who has been in front of theatre audiences since the age of twelve. She studied Stanislavsky's "the method" with Kent Bateman and Vic Vallero and the Meisner technique with Jovin Montinaro and Bob McAndrew.
She expanded her comedic range with lengthy stints in improv groups, the New Barbarians and The Improv-ables. Annie was also a dedicated member of the Theatre III Repertory Company, Metropole Theatre Group and Actorworks in Beverly Hills, where she also taught advanced Improvisation.
At 15 years old Annie was awarded the "Outstanding Comedic Actress" award for her portrayal of the Nurse in Romeo & Juliet at the prestigious Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. Other Shakespearean performances by Annie include Twelfth Night, As You Like It and The Comedy of Errors. In contemporary theatre, Annie portrayed the lead in Diary of Anne Frank, as well as major parts in William Saroyan's Hello Out There, Steven Tisch's The Carpenters, Jane Martin's Talking With..., Peter Dee's And Stuff and Earl Boen's long-running comedy, Medium Murder, to name just a few.
Prior to her stellar rise on BZZZ!, Annie had established herself for more than a decade as a hardworking actress with diverse film and television credits including HBO's Rita Rudner Show, NBC's Fall From Grace with Kevin Spacey, ABC's Lush Life, Playboy's Inside Out and the forever airing cult classic, CellBlock Sisters.
In her body of work to date, Annie has successfully carried off a variety of dramatic material from steamy love scenes (among them, playing Jessica Hahn opposite to Kevin Spacey's Jim Baker) to a comedically intimidating ex-girlfriend with Rita Rudner, a teenage troublemaker and a streetwise, rough and tumble motorcycle chick.
In TV guest appearances, Annie has been seen verbally duking-it-out with guests on Bill Maher's Politically Incorrect, kibitzing with Jay Leno on The Tonight Show, conversing on compatibility with Crook and Chase, debating decorum with Marilyn and Carolyn, tracking the truth about men with Dion Sanders and creating Celebrity Love Matches on Scoop with Sam Rubin. She was also a celebrity presenter at the 1997 BAMMIE Music Awards in San Francisco.
Annie's unique voice has also been heard across the airwaves on poplar radio shows including, Battle of the Sexes with Rick Dees, The Mark & Bryan Show, Love Lines with Dr. Drew, Rick Rachman, The Valentine Show, Groove Radio w/Poorman, Fox Sports Radio and the Late, Late Radio Hour with Steve Mason.
In a whirlwind year of daily national prime-access visibility on Tribune's popular, BZZZ! Annie still found time to serve as Grand Marshall of North Hollywood High's Homecoming Celebration and was the Guest of Honor beside television icon, Ralph Edwards, in New Mexico's 57th Annual Truth or Consequences Parade.
Annie's accomplishments don't stop when she leaves the spotlight, either. She has written several one-act plays: Eavesdrop Cafe II and III, Practically Perfect, Interview with Miss M and her latest, Hiatus, a comedy she produced, directed and starred in for a six week run in Los Angeles.
In addition to playwriting, Annie has been a published poet since age 13, when her first poem, Perhaps We Will Marry intrigued the editor of a national poetry anthology. Other published works include her award winning poem, Within, and the short story, Claudio, was included in Illusions, an anthology featuring LA's finest new writers. Annie has also written a column for Earth News Newsletter called Ask Annie and celebrity advice column in the popular teen magazine, All About You.
Her long awaited book of short stories entitled, Where Would I Be Without Me? stories, scenes and significant others, has already garnered reviews liking her style to "Sex in the City" and calling Annie a female Bukowski. Her writings reveal a personality that has always "lived for the moment" and been driven by an abiding curiosity about the world around her.
Over the years, this curiosity has led Annie to a number of quirky odd-jobs, contributing mightily to her whimsical outlook on life. She worked at a ball-bearing factory, was a theatre critic for The Beverly Review, made margaritas at the Gay Pride Festivals, marketed bonsai trees in shopping malls, recycled compact discs by making them into earrings, cleaned up animal waste at a pet shop, sold bee-pollen door-to-door, was a taste-tester for a fledgling frozen-pizza company, was a live-in Nanny, distributed promotional flyers on car windshields, prepared tax returns, was a street performer on Venice Boardwalk, was a dispatcher for a mom and pop messenger service, drew maps for a local real estate office, was a "mermaid" for a health spa, manufactured Aboriginal rain-sticks from bamboo, did magic tricks as a real-life Barbie for children's birthday parties, and read tea leaves to anyone who would listen.
Throughout her life, Annie Wood has been an active supporter of nonprofit organizations, contributing her time, financial support and celebrity endorsement whenever and wherever needed. Among the organizations on whose behalf she has worked are: AIDS Project Los Angeles; All For The Love of Children; March of Dimes; Wildlife Refuge: PETA; Earthsave LA; Alliance For Survival; Second Chance; Amnesty International; Pet Orphans Fund; Jewish Community Center; The Democratic National Committee; Project Angel Food, Haven House and Save the Children.
